Come Celebrate Community With Us !

A Message from Our Board Chair

Dear Common Good City Farm Friends and Neighbors,

As we step further into May, I find myself filled with a mix of excitement for the vibrant season unfolding at Common Good City Farm and a profound awareness of the challenges our community and region continue to navigate. From the buzz of our weekly Farm Market to the enthusiastic planting in our youth gardens, the farm is alive with the spirit of growth and connection.

This season, our signature fundraising event series, A Night on the Farm, is a testament to our evolution and commitment to intentional community building. What once was a single large annual party has blossomed into a thoughtful series of farm-to-table dinners. Each event is a unique opportunity to showcase the incredible talents of diverse local chefs, highlight the bounty of locally sourced produce, and celebrate the simple joy of sharing a meal together. This year, we’re thrilled to introduce even more ingenuity, with offerings like our upcoming "Garden Party" – a non-alcoholic, fun-forward event focused on herbal teas and fostering connection in our beautiful urban oasis. It’s moments like these, gathering together, that truly underscore the magic of Common Good.

Speaking of magic, who could forget the unforgettable and rare aurora borealis that graced our last gathering? It’s a beautiful reminder of what a special and grounding place the farm is within our bustling city.

I want to take a moment to extend my deepest gratitude to our incredible staff. In this current political climate, with its disorienting blows to regional jobs, policies, and budgets, their dedication, passion, and resilience are nothing short of inspiring. They are on the ground every day, ensuring our programs thrive and that our community feels supported and nourished. They are the heart of Common Good, and their hard work in the face of such uncertainty is truly commendable.

Through our diverse programs – from the bustling Pay-What-You-Can Market to our empowering youth initiatives and the hands-on learning in our Regenerative Agriculture Certificate Program – we are honored to meet so many of you. These interactions fuel our commitment, especially as we navigate a period of significant instability for so many in our region.

This brings me to a crucial point. As we brace for anticipated federal funding cuts and the continued uncertainty of DC budget decisions, our community’s support is more critical than ever. This year, we have a vital goal of raising $50,000 to ensure the continuity and strength of our programs. These funds will directly support our ability to provide fresh food access, offer enriching educational experiences, and maintain the farm as a sanctuary for all.

There are two wonderful ways you can directly support this goal in the coming weeks:

  1. Join us for A Night on the Farm next Thursday, May 22nd. Experience the culinary artistry of Chef Kay from Shaleafa’s Kitchen, connect with fellow supporters, and invest in our shared vision.

  2. Mark your calendars for our upcoming Garden Party on Thursday, June 12th. It promises to be a delightful evening celebrating community and the simple joys of the season.

If you're unable to attend these events, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps us weather these financial uncertainties and continue to be a steadfast resource for LeDroit Park and the wider DC community.

Thank you for being an integral part of the Common Good City Farm community. Your belief in our mission, your participation in our programs, and your generous support allow us to continue cultivating resilience, growing a just future, and providing a little bit of magic in the heart of the city.

With sincere gratitude,

Mareeha Niaz Board Chair
