Summer is heating up with our CSA, Workshops, and Youth Programs

Updates from the Farm

Dear Friends,

We are so excited to be welcoming people back onto our farm space! Last month we hosted our first field trip in over a year from Maya Angelou Public Charter School and wow, was it fun! This month we are expanding the number of volunteers for our City Farmer sessions, hosting a chocolate ganache making workshop with Christina Kim of Secret Cacao Garden, and holding a farm cooking demo with Stephanie Eyocko of Mixed Mag! However, we are most excited to announce that LEAF will be starting in-person this Sunday, June 13. More details in the youth section below.

We have also adapted our Farm Market so that customers can more easily navigate the market and choose their own produce. With the lifting of restrictions on farmer's market, we are planning to roll out samples of dishes featuring farm produce again soon!

This past Saturday we partnered with Friends of LeDroit Park, LeDroit Park Civic Association, and Uniting our Youth to host a Party in the Park to celebrate the opening of the splash pad with food, music, and kids crafts! A big thanks to Bacio Pizzeria for sponsoring the pizzas for the party! Do us a favor and tell them thank you when you see them next! We are looking forward to hosting more community events as well as our annual A Night on the Farm in person this year, with adaptations to keep everyone safe. If you have any feedback or ideas that you would like us to consider as we plan future events regarding safety or anything else, please feel free to email us.

Also, if you missed it, as part of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we collaborated with Washington Youth Garden to create a post highlighting Asian American Pacific Islander farmers. Check it out here and add any recommendations you may have!

With Gratitude,

Common Good City Farm

Scenes from the Farm

  • Cherries on our trees

  • And cherries packed up at the market ready for you to buy & eat!

  • A big thanks to volunteers Daniela, Rachel, Sofya, Elyse, and Zoe for helping us to unload, deconstruct, and move our compost bins! We are rebuilding our compost bins because the bins are sinking into the ground from the weight so we are relocating to sturdier ground and elevating the bins onto cinderblocks.

  • And here are the rebuilt compost bins! Thank you to Jeremy, Sofya, Daniela, and Nhaomie for assisting with the part 2 of the compost bin rebuild!

  • Here is Week 1 of our CSA with cabbage, potatoes, rhubarb, Red Russian Kale, mizuna lettuce, blueberries, apples, and basil.

  • Market volunteers Carolyn, Kelsey, and Christina assisting with our Wednesday Farm Market. Produce on display: Carrots, Purple Top Turnips, Radishes, Rhubarb, and Garlic Scapes.

  • We were thrilled to host our first in-person field trip in over a year! This class is from Maya Angelou PCS.

  • The students planted scarlet runner beans in mini pots and herbs and flowers in the planter boxes.

  • Councilmember Brianne Nadeau speaking at the Party in the Park to celebrate the opening of the splash pad.

  • Youth Programs Director Emily making summer sun catchers with kids at the party.

Youth Programs Update

OST_Petition.png

Common Good's LEAF program is supported through DC's OST (out of school time) funding. Take action and sign the petition to tell the DC Council that this funding needs to be restored so the city's program providers can serve all the kids who need these after school and summer programs!

LEAF_June2021.jpg

Our LEAF students recently completed a unit all about what a plant needs and are now learning all about pollinators! We've been having a great time learning and cooking together via Zoom and with our at home kits.

Check out Sammy and Korie enjoying the carrot hummus they made using our LEAF recipe kit!

We are very excited to start LEAF Youth Class on the farm again!! We'll have class on Sundays at 4:30 on June 13, June 27, July 11 and then every week. We will have Covid safety measures in place, but we will still be cooking! Zoom LEAF class will also be continuing on Wednesdays. If you are interested in getting further information about LEAF, please complete this interest form!

We've wrapped up our weekly video series this coming Sunday, but invite you to check out some of our youth video lessons on IGTV or YouTube. Learn about the orchard with Miss Juan, make kale salad with Emily and more!
